Lotto Divisions NZ: What Each Division Pays & How to Win
Every Saturday and Wednesday I sit down with the fresh draw and walk through what each line actually matched. The questions I get most are practical ones — "what division is 3 numbers plus Powerball?", "do 2 numbers and the bonus ball win anything?" — so here is the whole ladder in one place, in plain English, with the odds and the honest caveats.
The seven Lotto divisions, in plain words
When six main balls drop, every line on your ticket is checked against them. How many you match decides which division you land in. There are seven Lotto divisions — and the bonus ball matters for two of them.
Here is the full ladder, with the long-run odds per line:
| Division | What you need to match | Odds per line | Typical prize |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | All 6 main numbers | 1 in 3,838,380 | Jackpot (shared, $1M+ pool) |
| 2 | 5 main + the bonus ball | 1 in 639,730 | around $20,000 |
| 3 | 5 main numbers | 1 in 19,386 | around $600 |
| 4 | 4 main + the bonus ball | 1 in 7,754 | around $55 |
| 5 | 4 main numbers | 1 in 485 | around $30 |
| 6 | 3 main + the bonus ball | 1 in 363 | around $22 |
| 7 | 3 main numbers | 1 in 35 | 4 bonus Lotto lines (fixed) |
The prizes in Divisions 2–6 are shared — if 500 people hit Division 4, the Division 4 pool is split between them, so your actual payout moves around. Division 7 is the one exception: it pays a fixed set of four bonus lines, not cash.
What division is 3 numbers on Lotto NZ?
Three main numbers is Division 7 — the most common win, about a 1-in-35 chance per line. It doesn't pay cash; it gives you four bonus Lotto lines for the next draw. Match those same three numbers plus the bonus ball and you step up to Division 6, which pays a small cash prize (usually around $22).
What division is 3 numbers plus the Powerball?
This gets asked a lot. Three main numbers on their own is Lotto Division 7. Add the Powerball on the same line and you move into the Powerball ladder — specifically Powerball Division 6, a small cash prize paid on top of whatever the main line won. Powerball never creates a win by itself: it only multiplies a line that has already matched something in the main draw.
Do 2 numbers and the bonus ball win a prize?
In the main Lotto draw, no — the smallest Lotto prize is three numbers (Division 7). Two numbers, even with the bonus ball, don't win Lotto on their own. The bonus ball is there to bump a four- or five-number line up a division, not to reward two matches.
The one place 2 + bonus pays is through Powerball: a line with two main numbers, the bonus ball and the right Powerball lands in the lowest Powerball division for a tiny fixed prize. Without the Powerball, it's nothing.
Powerball and Strike: the add-on ladders
Powerball runs its own division ladder that mirrors the main game — same number matches, plus the Powerball on the same line. Each Powerball division pays on top of the Lotto prize for that line. The Powerball rules changed on 13 September 2026 (new ball pool, new odds, and a Must Be Won mechanism), so the exact Powerball division payouts are worth a look in our Powerball changes guide before you read too much into older prize tables.
Strike is different again: it asks you to name the first four Lotto numbers in the exact order they're drawn, with four of its own divisions.

One honest reminder
However the divisions land, every draw is a separate, independent event. No ball is ever "due," and no way of picking numbers changes the odds of any division. The ladder above is just the rulebook for what you've already got — a bit of context for the fun, not a plan for a win.
Play within your limit, and if a line ever does hit Division 1, the money is tax-free and paid as a lump sum.
Quick answers
What are the 7 Lotto divisions in NZ?
Division 1 is all 6 numbers; Division 2 is 5 numbers plus the bonus ball; Division 3 is 5 numbers; Division 4 is 4 numbers plus the bonus ball; Division 5 is 4 numbers; Division 6 is 3 numbers plus the bonus ball; Division 7 is 3 numbers (which pays bonus lines, not cash). What division do you get for 3 numbers on Lotto NZ?
Three main numbers is Division 7 — the most common win, about 1 in 35 per line. It pays four bonus Lotto lines rather than cash. Three numbers plus the bonus ball is Division 6, which pays a small cash prize.
What division is 3 numbers plus the Powerball?
Three numbers plus the Powerball on the same line is Powerball Division 6 — a small cash prize paid on top of the main Lotto win. Powerball only multiplies a line that has already matched something; it never wins on its own.
Do 2 numbers and the bonus ball win a prize in Lotto?
Not in the main Lotto draw — the smallest Lotto prize is three numbers (Division 7). Two numbers with the bonus ball only pays through Powerball, as the lowest Powerball division, and only if the Powerball is also on that line.
What are the odds of each Lotto division?
Division 1 is 1 in 3,838,380; Division 2 is 1 in 639,730; Division 3 is 1 in 19,386; Division 4 is 1 in 7,754; Division 5 is 1 in 485; Division 6 is 1 in 363; Division 7 is 1 in 35. All prizes are shared except Division 7's fixed bonus lines.
Did the Powerball divisions change on 13 September 2026?
Yes. Powerball's ball pool, odds and division payouts changed on 13 September 2026, and a Must Be Won mechanism was introduced. Check the current Powerball changes guide for the exact new prize table rather than older figures.
