Is Adding Powerball to Every Line Worth It?
Kia ora! Powerball turns a six-number line into a seven-number line — and changes how you can win, not the jackpot odds. Here's my plain-English breakdown.
What Powerball actually does
The Lotto jackpot requires matching 6 numbers plus the Powerball. Adding it to a line also opens up more ways to win smaller divisions (Powerball-only hits and bigger prizes when you match 5+PB, and so on). It roughly doubles the cost of a line but adds those extra prize tiers.
The honest maths
Your chance of winning something goes up with Powerball because there are more ways to match. Your chance of the jackpot specifically — already tiny — stays tiny; the Powerball is a second gate, not a multiplier of luck. It's a "more ways to win small, same dream for the big one" trade.
So is it worth it?
- Yes, if the extra 80 cents a line is pocket change and you enjoy having more ways to win. Most of my 30 lines include it for exactly that reason.
- Skip it if you're watching the total. Six numbers alone is a perfectly good ticket.
- Never let "almost won because of Powerball" feelings push you to spend more than planned. That's the game talking, not the numbers.

Quick answers
Does Powerball improve my jackpot odds?
No — it's an extra requirement to match, so the jackpot odds stay tiny. It adds extra ways to win smaller divisions.
Is every Powerball addition the same cost?
Yes, it's a fixed add-on per line. Weigh it against your total budget.
Can I play without Powerball?
Absolutely. Six numbers alone is a valid, cheaper ticket — just with fewer prize tiers.
